 IIT Kharagpur

India's first Indian Institute of Technology was established at Kharagpur. In 1946 a committee was set up by Sir Jogendra Singh (who was the member of the Viceroy’s Council for the Department of Education, Health and Agriculture). The 22 members committee led by Sri N. R Sarkar.  The Sarkar committee recommended the establishment of Higher technical institutions in four regions of India Eastern, Northern, Western and southern.  The committee also suggested to design the institutions for not only to train undergraduates but they should also engage in research and technicians and technical teachers as well.  The institutions need to produce world class technicians and researchers as institutions abroad. 


    As per Sarkar Committee recommendations, India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who believed the future needs of science and technology would be fulfilled only with the establishment of world class institutions.  The first Indian institute of Technology was first established in May, 1950 at Hijli camp, Kharagpur in the eastern part of India.  Initially this IIT started functioning from Calcutta later shifted to Hijli, Kharagpur in September 1950.  The formal inauguration of IIT Kharagpur was held on  August 8, 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who was the first education minister of independent India.  From this inauguration these institutions were named as “Indian Institute of Technology.”  The journey of world famous IIT Kharagpur was started from Hijli, where freedom fighters were prisoned.  This may be one in very few institutions started from the prison.

Admission into IIT Kharagpur

     

    All the IITs are autonomous public technical universities, and they are governed by Institute of Technology.  The admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programs in all IITs across the country is conducted through Common Entrance Tests.  The Indian Institute of Technology Council will conduct Joint Entrance Exam called IIT-JEE for under graduation and for Integrated Post Graduation.  Though the GATE entrance exam M.Tech-PhD admissions will held. Commo entrance test JAM is conducted for the admissions into Master Degree M.Sc and other post graduate science programs for admission in IITs.
