Biography of Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda is an inspiring personality and well known throughout the world.  Swami Vivekananda became popular after delivering an inspiring speech at the Parliament of Religion held in Chicago in 1893, and he represented Hinduism.  His knowledge on Eastern and Western Culture as well as his spiritual insight, excellent conversation, broad human sympathy, Colourful Personality and his great figure attracted the Americans.  In America he became India's spiritual ambassador.  Swami Vivekananda is an inspiration of modern India.  He preached the ideal of a strength giving and man making religion.  He believed that service to man was the worship of God.  The mission of Swami Vivekananda was not only for India, it was for the world.  He was a lover of mankind, he always promoted peace and brotherhood one the basis of spiritual foundation on a vedantic oneness of existence.  



Swami Vivekananda introduced Indian Philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western part of the world.  He raised awareness and brought Hinduism to the status of a major world religion by the end of the 19th century.  He was a major head in the Hindu reform movements. Swami Vivekananda started the Ramakrishna Mission on May 1st, 1897 near Kolkata, West Bengal. Now Ramakrishna Mission has branches throughout the country and also works in many countries.  This organization mainly expands the Hindu Philosophy of Vedanta, Advaita Vedanta and Yoga- Gnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bakthi Yoga and Raja Yoga.


Early life of Swami Vivekananda 

The original name of Swami Vivekananda is Narendranadh Datta, born in a Bengali Hindu family on 12 January, 1863. His Father is Vishwanath Dutta and Mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi. His education was done in Kolkata.  Swami Vivekananda’s mother has faith in God and has a great impact on her son.  Swami Vivekananda grew up in a Hindu family but studied several other religious books, this made him to think widely.  Swami Vivekananda died on 4th July, 1902 in Beluru Math, Kolkata at the age of 39 years.  


Swami Vivekananda spread the message of India’s spiritual heritage all over the world.
