IIT Madras

IIT Madras is a public technical and research university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.  It was established in 1959.  IIT Madras is the third Indian Institute of Technology in India.  The first IIT was established in 1951 at Kharagpur and second was established in 1958 at Mumbai.  IIT Madras is located in south Chennai, on a campus with 630 acres.  The institute  is a residential campus, nearly three thousand students and faculty can be accommodated. 

The process of establishment of this institute began in 1956, When First Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, went to West Germany on an official visit, and was urged by the assistance of the Government of Germany, to set up a higher technical institute in India.  This led to the signing of the first Indo-German Agreement in Bonn for the establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology at Madras in 1959.  As per this agreement Germany provided services of German professors, training facilities for the Indian faculty and the supply of scientific and technical equipment for the establishment of the Central Workshop and Laboratories at IIT Madras. 


The institute was inaugurated in 1959 by professor Humayun Kabir, Central Minister for Scientific and Cultural affairs. Dr. A. Laxmana Swamy was the first Chairman of the Board of Governors and Dr. B. Sengupto was the first Director of the Institute.  IIT Madras was declared as an Institute of Nation Importance in 1961, by the act of Parliament of India. 


IIT Madras has collaborated with many prominent institutes and Universities to enhance the research and technology.  The institute always supports the active collaboration with other universities to create unique and most valuable resources of knowledge globally.
