Indian Team to Tokyo Olympics



        The largest sporting event of the world is going to start on 23rd July, 2021.  The 32nd Summer Olympiad will be held in Tokyo, Japan which was scheduled in July 2020, but due to the Corona pandemic all the world kept under lockdown.  The impact of Covid-19 affected the global major sporting events and led to postponement.  One year later, finally the Tokyo Olympics-2020 will start on 23 July and end on August 8, 2021.  
      
       Tokyo was selected as the host city in the 125th International Olympic Committee session which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2013.  Almost 206 nations are participating in this event.  Nearly 11300 Athletes will compete in 33 sports competitions and 339 events held across 42 competition venues (Stadiums).  Five new sports were introduced in this event.  Baseball, Softball, Karate, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing are the new sports included in the Tokyo Olympics.  With this 18 new events and 474 extra athletes were added. 
 

India in Olympics 

        India participated at the Olympics-1900 for the first time. Only one athlete Norman Pritchard participated, and won 2 silver medals. He became the first Asian to win an Olympic medal.  India sent  a team with five members 3 athletes and 2 were wrestling to the Olympics for the first time in 1920, which was held in Belgium.  So far in 100 years (1920-2020) of Olympic journey, India won 28 medals among them 9 are gold medals, 7 are silver medals and 12 are bronze medals.  India won only 1 individual gold medal in shooting; the remaining gold medals were in Men’s Hockey. 

        With new aspirations and hopes of 140 crores of Indians, 125 players landed in Tokyo for Olympics-2021.  Among them 70 are men and 55 are women competitors will challenge in 18 sports categories.  And two alternative players one for reserve goalkeeper in men’s and women’s hockey.  The total number of contingent including coaches, officials and support staff the total team is with 228 members.  Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh are the flag bearers for the opening ceremony whereas Bajrang Punia is the flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
